The octimber Story
In 2018 I needed a background for my food photography blog, Follow My Gut. At the time, I struggled to find something I truly liked that fit my budget. I looked into a few products to no avail. With little options, I ran with the crazy idea that I could make a background myself. I spent a lot of time comparing lumber and colors in hardware stores. I had long conversations with my carpenter uncle Les and my construction neighbor Todd to understand woodworking.
With time and diligent practice, I created my first photography background out of wood. As the weeks and days passed, I made more backgrounds and perfected the process. Looking back on the time that has passed along this journey, I had no idea that what I created then could turn into something so beautiful. I’m thankful that one idea and significant gumption led to octimber and a product that fits all of my photography background needs.
The Founder
Danielle N. Salmon
I’m a Jamaican-American from Pasadena, CA with a professional background working in public affairs for a major healthcare organization and 5 years running a restaurant website. Photographing food has led me to design and build the most perfectly imperfect photography backgrounds out of wood. In my hometown, I visit local hardware stores to source materials and create beautiful backgrounds. Creating these backgrounds instantly elevated my food photography without taking away from the product at focus in every image. octimber brings me an immense amount of joy and peace, and I can’t wait to give that same feeling to others in each background.
